NHS Science Olympiad Team

2009-2010 Season

Welcome to our third season of Science Olympiad. A team-based academic sport focused on problem solving in science and technology. If you'd like to find out more about the specific activities, go to the national Science Olympiad web site and read about class C (grades 9-12) events - http://www.soinc.org/. For regional and state level information, check out the Minnesota state site - www.minnesotaso.org/. 

Up to 15 students, no more than 7 seniors, from one team can compete at a tournament. This year there are two Northfield class C teams.

In addition to our coach, Susan Singer, our team is assisted by Dennis Ea, Jonathan Hillis, John O'Neill, and Frazier Mork who are Carleton students. We're grateful to parents providing transportation to our events



2008-2009 Results:

Northfield Science Olympiad heads to State on March 14 (∏ day)

Northfield takes first at Rochester Regional

We went to the regional finals on Saturday February 7th at Mayo High School and came home with 16 medals and a first place trophy! Check out our score page for details. We medaled in 8 of 12 events, taking 4th and 5th places in the remaining 4. Century High School came in second (15 points behind us) with Triton in third (22 points behind us) and Mayo in fourth (25 points behind). Cheer us on as we get ready for State.

"I Love Science Day"

February 14, 9-11 AM in the High School Cafeteria

We'll be sponsoring an activity for the K-5 students at the first ever "I Love Science Day." If you are in grades K-5, come for a morning full of fun science activities sponsored by the high school with activities organized by high school students, local college students, and Northfield teachers. Regional at Mayo High School in Rochester

February 7th

We're off to our regional competition on Saturday morning, February 7th. We'll be leaving the high school promptly at 6:45 AM and should be back at the high school (front entrance) by 3 PM. Parents are welcome to come and cheer us on. For details on our events, see the attached schedule.

Wayzata Invitational

We had a great day at Wayzata on January 10th competing against Minnesota and Wisconsin teams. Congratulations to our silver and gold medalists and the whole team for an excellent first tournament of the year.

Nathan Barnes and John Breckenridge placed second in astronomy. Merrill Lutsky and Evan Walser-Kuntz placed second in cell biology - that's two years in a row we've been strong in cell biology. Evan Walser-Kuntz and Rachel Wadleigh took third in disease detective. John Breckenridge and Nick Benson took third in keep the heat in with lots of design brainstorming this fall from many of you.

There were 20 strong teams at Wayzata. We are ceelebrating Svea Drentlaw and and Laura Wadleigh's 6th place in health science. Congratulations to Michael Paulson, John Breckenridge and Rachel Wadleigh for their 7th place in picture this. Emma Singer and Nick Benson took 8th in herpetology, Merrill Lutsky and Laura Wadleigh were 8th in fossils, and our new write it do it team, Jamison Starr and Rachel Wadleigh also placed 8th. The Nick and Mike Benson came in 9th in it's about time.



2007-2008 Season Highlights Below

We had a great first year as a team and are thrilled that we made it to the state competition at St. Thomas. We finished 17th among the 31 teams that made it to the state competition. Not bad for our first year. Our team medaled in three events. Check out the Scores link for more details.

NHS Science Olypmiad Team is going to State on March 1!

Success at IHCC Regional! Half the teams that participated in the regional go on to compete with 31 teams state wide on March 1 at St. Thomas. We made it! Our team medaled in in 3 of the 12 events, competing against 14 teams. Check out our events in the attached PDF.


Regionals (Saturday February 2) at Inver Hills Community College - Team member be sure to bring a signed copy of the attached permission form. The second attachment is the schedule of events for regionals in PDF format. The third attachment show who is tentatively assigned to each event.


Wayzata Invitational (January 12th) - At our first tournament ever, we won 6 medals and took 6th place out of 14 teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin. For more details click on the Scores link.
