1)  Q What are the three areas of transition?
A

POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING - Education and/or training that occur over a lifetime such as preparation for and application to technical institutes, community colleges, universities, and adult/community education.

 

EMPLOYMENT - The acquisition of skills for work or other meaningful adult activities, such as work habits, career exploration, community work experience, and training.

 

INDEPENDENT LIVING - This area may include the following, when appropriate: 1) RECREATION AND LEISURE The initiation and development of group and/or individual recreation and social skills and activities; 2) HOME LIVING: The skills necessary to fully participate in life in the home, including such things as cooking, money management, and personal grooming; 3) COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: The skills needed to access community resources including people, public places and activities such as transportation and government agencies, volunteerism, activities or organizations the students may want to incorporate into his/her adult life.

A
- Discuss career plans, dreams, and goals with your child.

- Review with your child the necessary requirements for high school graduation.

- Help your child become familiar with student organizations in school or in the community.

- Review with your child his/her IEP goals and objectives.

- Explore with your child education and training requirements for your child's area of interest.

- Stress the importance of staying in school and earning a diploma.

- Check on available support services in higher education and/or training options.

- Nuture self-advocacy.

- Help your child learn about his/her disability and accommodations to assist him/her.

- Celebrate accomplishments.
