The following are direct quotes from Honors Art students about the value of art education.
"If I were to meet someone on the street who was declaring that a Visual Art Education were futile or silly, I would be insulted and appalled. I would also be sure to disprove their misconceptions. On the contrary, to their opinion, I believe that an art education is enriching. It promotes the study of objects and beings. It can be almost scientific in the study of how one moves, how things are shaped and how the light touches them. It is an expression of ones thoughts, that need not be explained, because it is interpreted by the viewer, and their own thoughts. A visual arts education is a study on psychology, science, history, and math. It is all encompassing, and offers exploration of everything of this world, tangible things, living things, and intangible things such as thought, feeling, dreams, and make-believe." Author Casey B. "If somebody were to say that they didn't believe in an arts ecucation, I would say that I used to agree with them...but this is how I changed my mind. If I had not been forced to take art classes I may not have ever found the one subject in school that captures my mind and can hold it for more than twenty minutes." Author Josh M. "Visual art education is the main structure of everything. Art is everywhere around you, in business, logos, architecture, packaging, etc. If nobody believed in a visual art education, there would be nothing interesting to look at." Author Sadie F. "If someone I met didn't believe in art education I would really have to resist the urge to smack them upside the head. It's everywhere! The decoration and design in houses and buildings, advertisements, the books we read our kids, the logos on our clothes, the cartoons in our Sunday paper! Those things wouldn't exist if not for art education and to say that you don't believe in it would be like saying you don't believe in virtually anything. And that's just ridiculous. I hope that i don't meet anyone like that because I fear I would have to give them one heck of a lecture, and I don't think they'd like it." Author Kaity P. "If I was to say something to someone who didn't believe in a visual art education, I would tell them that visual art helps develop creative thinking and visual enrichment. Students will be able to appreciate things they see in the world, rather than ignore them. IT will help create new individual thought, creating a more interesting and thoughtful world. If we didn't have art in the world, one could make the conclusion that the world would not be the way it is todya. It has helped us shape ourselves as a nation and will continue to influence our culture for centuries to come." Author Dan Z. Pretty insightful young people...don't you think! Mrs. Norrie |
